It has been a great week for ݮƵ pupils in sports again, with outstanding performances across athletics, cricket, rugby and golf.

Lower School 2 pupil Blake set a new U16 girls’ high jump record with a superb leap of 1.49m at the U15 County Heptathlon Championships. Blake finished second overall and has qualified for the Regional Finals in May. Her performance also included strong showings across the long jump, hurdles, shot put and 800m.

Meanwhile, James (L6) enjoyed a spectacular start to the cricket season, scoring an unbeaten 156 from just 83 balls in the first round of the National U17 Cup. His innings included four sixes and 21 fours, and helped set up the team’s progress to the next round where they will face Brentwood.

There was further cricket success for Ben (U6) who earned a place on the honours board with a superb five-wicket haul, taking 5/21 in the 1st XI’s all-day victory over Haberdashers on Saturday. He followed this up in style on Tuesday, scoring a blistering 88 from 44 balls in the 1st XI T20 against Tonbridge. ݮƵ posted 270/5, with Tonbridge dismissed for 142 in reply.

Omar (Middles) had a tremendous week. Not only did he contribute a superb unbeaten 83 from just 29 balls in a devastating team batting display, he has also been selected for the Bunbury competition, a prestigious festival which brings together the top 48 cricketers in the country. This is quite an achievement and he is the first player since our current 1st XI captain Leo (U6, Thomason) to have been selected for it.

In rugby news, we are delighted to announce that Will (Vths) has earned a call-up to the Wales U17 training camp this May, marking an exciting step forward in his development on the international stage.

Finally, congratulations are in order for Rohit (L6) who has achieved outstanding sporting success, placing among the top three qualifiers for the Sky Sports Junior European Golf Open Finals in Spain. This follows an excellent round of 77 over the weekend, securing his place on the international stage. A superb achievement and we wish him every success in the Finals.

Congratulations to all!

Our pupils have, once again, been excelling on the national stage this week, showcasing talent, teamwork and determination across multiple sports.

In the Swimming National Schools’ Bath Cup at the Olympic Aquatic Centre, Faaiq (U6), Matthew (U6), Emilio (U6) and Tako (Middles) delivered outstanding performances, making the national final and finishing among the top seven teams in the country in the medley relay. Their commitment in training and composure under pressure were a credit to the School and their coaches.

Meanwhile, the Girls’ 1st XI Hockey team continued their remarkable run by reaching the Tier 1 National Finals.
In a fiercely contested semi-final, they were edged out 3–5 by Clifton, before facing Repton in the bronze medal match. In a thrilling rematch of the indoor national gold medal game, the team produced a superb performance, drawing 2–2 in normal play and clinching victory via shuffles.

The Boys’ 1st XI Hockey team played a thrilling match against Bradfield College. ݮƵ made a strong start, converting two penalty corners in the first half. Bradfield responded after the break, narrowing the gap to 2–1, before Alex (U6) restored ݮƵ ’s advantage with a superb strike. The closing minutes were nail-biting, with Bradfield scoring again and then earning a penalty corner in the final play of the game. However, a brilliant goal-line clearance by James (U6, Trevelyan) secured ݮƵ ’s place in the semi-final.

Last but not least, the Golf team won the East Region Championship, with a fabulous performance in hugely challenging conditions on a very windy links course, overcoming Uppingham 5-0 in the final, and thus winning the Ratcliffe Cup.

The girls’ 1st XI hockey team recorded a superb victory over Millfield on Tuesday in a thrilling Schools U18 Tier 1 Championship quarter-final.

After a tightly contested match, a fantastic equaliser from Laura (U6, Hailey) took the score to 1–1 at full time and sent the game to penalties – or “shuffles” in hockey parlance.

Under enormous pressure, and showing immense character, Lois (L6, Allenby), Lettie (U6, Melville) and then Florrie (Vths, Colvin) each held their nerve to score their shuffle. In goal, Georgie (L6, Hailey) delivered a masterclass, saving all three of Millfield’s attempts to secure the win. It was a pulsating encounter, and the girls now progress to the last four in the country and the national semi-final.

It was an extraordinary afternoon of sport. The performance from the girls was very special, the management of the team was exceptional, and the passionate support from the sidelines undoubtedly made a difference to the outcome.

The 1st XI girls’ hockey team have carried their fantastic pre-Christmas form into January. Having won the national indoor silver medal in December, the girls now sit top of the outdoor England Hockey Tier 1 league with one game remaining, having won all their matches so far.

They continued their winning streak today with a 5–0 away victory against St John’s, Leatherhead. Player of the match, centre back Scarlett (Vths, Alban’s), was outstanding and showed maturity beyond her years. Laura (U6, Hailey) continued her scoring streak with a brace, Florrie (Vths, Colvin) also scored twice, and captain Freya (U6, Allenby) added another.

The team boasts an impressive goal difference of 27, having scored 33 goals in 6 games and conceding only 6. Previous wins against Framlingham, St George’s Weybridge, Ipswich and Sevenoaks put them in a strong position, and we hope this will lead to a home tie in the last eight of the national knock-out stages.

We are delighted to share that the Legends Tennis Centre has now joined ݮƵ, further strengthening the role of tennis within our vibrant sporting community.

The Centre’s superb facilities include four indoor and four outdoor courts, all featuring a high-quality acrylic surface, similar to that used at the Australian Open. Pupils will therefore benefit from a true Grand Slam quality bounce as they train and compete.

Our new Director of Tennis, Francisco Ruiz Lopez, is driving the continued growth of tennis across the School, inspiring both increased participation and competitive success. He is now joined by the talented coaching team at Legends, bringing an exciting new depth of expertise and quality to our pupil tennis programme.

The tennis centre will also continue to have a community outlook, teaching the game to local children as well as housing an adult membership who play, train and compete locally as a club. Our goal is to both develop young players through the Legends community programme and attract young players into the School who will be able to compete internationally on the tennis stage.

We look forward to sharing more tennis news with you throughout the year.

Over the Christmas break, ݮƵ pupils took part in two exciting overseas sports tours, combining intensive training with valuable cultural experiences.

Netball Teams in Barbados:

Two ݮƵ netball teams, one U14 and one U16, travelled to Barbados for a tour that offered outstanding opportunities for sporting development and cultural enrichment.

Across eight competitive fixtures, the teams recorded seven wins, adapting impressively to the fast-paced and physical Bajan style of play. A particular highlight was an inspiring coaching session led by former Barbados National Coach Denise Alleyne, which encouraged the girls to refine their technical and tactical understanding.

Beyond the court, the players explored the island, enjoyed a taste of Caribbean culture and some well-earned sunshine, and represented ݮƵ with enthusiasm and team spirit throughout.

Senior Boys Hockey in Barcelona:

Meanwhile, the senior boys’ hockey squad travelled to Barcelona for a three-night pre-season tour, preparing for the upcoming term through a series of high-quality training sessions at the prestigious Polo Club.

The team secured a 6–4 victory against local side Linia 22 in a match played at a stadium originally used for the Olympic Games, an experience that will live long in the memory. The boys also enjoyed sightseeing time in the city, visiting the Sagrada FamiliaOlympic Park, and the Gothic Quarter.

The tour provided the perfect start to the season, and we look forward to seeing the squad build on their progress in the matches ahead.
